Pro Tools and Pro Tools Ultimate Software 2019.12 on macOS 10.13.6, 10.14.6, and 10.15.1 — 12/17/19 2 “Audio Input for Pro Tools is disabled.” on Mojave. (PT-247690) macOS 10.14 (Mojave) introduced a system preference that blocks access to “the microphone” unless you explicitly allow it on a per application basis.
The last time I purchased Pro Tools was in 2012. I bought Pro Tools 10.0 for Students, which came with a miraculous four years of software upgrades for just a few hundred dollars. The last version I received under that plan was Pro Tools 12.4, in December of 2015. Four years on, that version is still working really well for me under macOS Mojave (10.14.6).
Avid announced some Cyber Monday deals that are still live until Christmas Eve, which has me investigating whether now is the time to upgrade. It looks like my options are:
Pro Tools Features
- When you buy products through links across our site, we may earn an affiliate commission.
- Pro Tools and Pro Tools Ultimate Software 2019.12 Windows 10 — 12/16/19 2 Installation of QuickTime Windows may fail with a application hang (PT-243411) The installation of Apple QuickTime may hang and must be force quit on the Windows Operating System. This can occurs regardless of your Pro Tools installation.
- $199 for an upgraded Pro Tools perpetual license, with one year of active support (and new releases).
- If I can get education pricing through my wife, this reduces to $99/year.
- A subscription Crossgrade: $80 for year one (with a Cyber Monday promotion), $99 for year two, then $299/year.
- Apple’s Logic Pro X for $199.
The main driver for upgrading at all is Catalina support. It looks like the Avid Video Engine is the only part of 12.4 that isn’t 32-bit, and I don’t do anything with video, but I’m not sure if the bundle will work well with the embedded 32-bit binary. I don’t plan to update my machines to Catalina for a while, so this is more of a theoretical issue for at least a few more months.
I’m pretty sure I’ll go with a perpetual license when I finally upgrade. After the end of year two, it’s substantially less expensive than a subscription, and I’ve already demonstrated that I can easily live with an out-of-date version for a while. $299/year for a subscription doesn’t match the value I’m getting out of Pro Tools at this point in my life. Since there’s no current discount on a perpetual license upgrade, I’ll just wait until upgrading to Catalina forces my hand.
Pro Tools 2019.12 has been released with support for macOS Catalina. This latest update allows users to start the process of transitioning to the latest macOS. However, there are limitations and restrictions with this initial Pro Tools release you should be aware of before upgrading.
Since Apple released their latest Operating System, macOS Catalina (10.15.1), there has been a scramble to re-develop and adapt the Pro Tools software to be compatible. Avid has just released the latest version of Pro Tools with support for macOS Catalina, Pro Tools 2019.12. While this is great news for people using Catalina, there are some restriction on this latest release that need to be considered before upgrading.
While most audio related features are available, there is no support yet for import/export of MOV, MP4, M4A, or AAC files. Basically, if you're working with video, you will not have support for importing video files into Pro Tools 2019.12 Furthermore, if you are working with audio files in AAC or M4A, you will have to convert these files for WAV or AAF in order to use them. Check out the info below for a full list of supported files and functionality.

We encourage everyone to be careful when deciding to upgrade. Make sure to check with any 3rd parts plug-in companies to make sure they too support macOS Catalina. If you're not having any issues with your current version of Pro Tools, you might want to consider waiting to upgrade until Avid has resolved all issues with the Pro Tools software. This is what we intend on doing.
